Midori Takada

Crown Ruler is honored to present a living legend - Midori Takada

Verdant utopias, meditative caves and abundant life. Japanese percussionist Midori Takada invokes entire ecosystems - her hypnotic, minimalist music based in conceptions of coherence between sound and the human body. A cult artist whose reputation continues to grow as new generations discover her music.

Finally returning to Australian shores for what are sure to be two stunning solo performances, catch this truly singular this June.

Takada is a rebel and an innovator. A Japanese percussion virtuoso and composer whose unique artistry spans four decades. After abandoning her Western classical training, she studied drumming in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, and the intricate delicacy of Gamelan music in Bali. Her explorations of the East Asian and West African percussion traditions have resulted in a number of sought-after works, including her essential, Through The Looking Glass, a holy grail in the modern resurgence of those digging for older ambient music.

Takada stands with one foot in the broad minimalist compartment and works in many ways in the same spirit as Steve Reich or Philip Glass. Her other foot is somewhere else, not far from the poetic worlds of the fourth-world genre and the mind-expanding harmonics. Midori Takada is a legend in the true sense of the word.
