MMW: CR Showcase with Ruby Savage

As part of Melbourne Music Week, Crown Ruler proudly brings together a hybrid cast of music and visual stars, flexing a full vibration of it’s recently evolved multidisciplinary agency. On Friday December 10th, Max Watts will be transformed into a sensation bending night of immersive bliss. 

Taking the helm - the radiant Ruby Savage comes straight from the UK with a heavy record bag jammed with warm grooves and dance-floor bombs. Recognised for her discerning taste and infectious spirit, there’s an inimitable flair that breathes through her sets. Shifting through everything from post-punk to dubbed out soul, disco not disco to pulsing soulful house, Ruby is no stranger to making dancers contort themselves freely. A fixture of London’s flourishing nightlife, her presence has been felt across the likes of NTS, Vinyl Factory and Boiler Room. Ruby will be joined on stage by MaggZ, Nayndng and Karen Bravo who each bring their individual and empowering dance expression to the night.

Such an evening calls for a very special assembly - Introducing the Crown Ruler All Star Band. Local favourites Izy, Tiana Khasi, Elle Shimada, Yussef Harare Jnr. and Jess Lumbar come together for a one off performance. A flaunt of forward leaning musicianship, these Naarm based talents join forces to deliver a powerful jam of soul powered fusion.  

Keeping the bodies moving, Chicago born, Naarm based Mothafunk brings her blender of permeable club sounds, while Emelyne & Lori go b2b for a journey of more post-punk-funk and bass tipped, dubbed out rhythms. 

Accompanying the night’s soundtrack, get lifted to a transformative world via the visual construction of Alchemy Orange, Rhys Newling and Mikaela Stafford. 

Proud Yorta Yorta artist Alchemy Orange will reimagine our stage with her contemporary Organic Architecture that is at once concerned with Indigenous led histories and futures. Her distinct floristry style will focus on the beauty and possibilities that exist on Aboriginal land, and how this can be expressed through floral art. An immersive experience, installation artist Mikaela Stafford will bring staging to life, integrating her dynamic and vibrant 3D animations as the backdrop. Her experimental practice will create a truly shimmering environment for dancers to delve into. Commonly found lighting up club environments across Naarm, Rhys Newling will further add his expertise, transforming the sonic soundscape into an audiovisual experience that transcends the limitations of sole sound. 

This event will take place on the lands of the Wurrundjeri People of the Kulin Nation. We acknowledge their Elders past, present and emerging and pay their respect to all First Nations people. Always Was, Always Will Be.
